Himachal Pradesh – the foothills of the Himalayas showcases several lovely surprises from the abundance of nature like rivers, glacier-fed lakes and various flora and fauna expanding into the plains of North India. One of the surprises hidden in plain sight is the Kareri Lake, also known as Kumarwah Lake. This is a shallow fresh water lake which is situated in the south of the Dhauladhar range.

Itis approximately 9 km northwest of Dharamshala, in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. This Kareri Lake trek attracts a large number of tourists nowadays. This lake manages to carve a niche in the hearts of the visitors who witness this outstanding beauty. Glaciers of the Dhauladhar range feed this lake. The melting snow is the source of Kareri Lake.The lake usually freezes during the months of November and will last up to April/May.

How to get there?

There are buses which are available from Dharamshala to Ghera village starting from the morning. You can also cover this distance by taxi or jeep. The Kareri Lake trek begins from the market in the Ghera village. The village has a road treading on which you will usually come across the bridge and continue moving on the same route along the Khauli river.

About 30 minutes, you can continue the trekking, and you will pass Sari village, and from here, Kareri village is only 2 km away. You will pass through wonderful scenery which will make you stress-free. Walking ahead, you will also cross the wooden bridge over the Kareri stream. From there it will take approximately another 30 minutes to reach the village.

The camping grounds and the forest guest house are only 10 minutes away from this place. You can also set the camp in the meadows near the stream. If you wish to use the forest guest house, you must speak with the forest ranger officer in advance. Home-stay along the Kareri village is also a good option for the trekkers.

What is the best time to trek?

You can go the Kareri Lake at any time in the year and also visit the nearby attractions. Note that when you visit the lake during the period of November or December to May or April, the lake will remain frozen. Extra caution is required when visiting this place during this time as the ice thickness can be unpredictable, and the surface will be slippery.

Carry your own water bottles to stay hydrated always
Carry a few snacks and a small first aid kit for any emergencies
